Having background in mining, as a Miner, Mining Shiftboss and Mine Training Officer, Garry Collins had the responsibility at various times for underground induction, mining school, supervisor, safety training and production of training material.

Leaving MIM to join National Mutual in 1977 to find that few insurers offered Personal Insurance protection to underground workers. ie Personal Income Replacement, Life, Trauma or Total and Permanent Disablement.

To their credit, in 1992, NML agreed to an Australia-wide study on the true risks involved in Metalliferous Mining flying underwriters to major mining centres throughout Australia interviewing Mine Safety Officers, State Worker Compensation Boards, local Hospitals, State Mine Departments etc.

Eventually delivering a report to Management recommending that all forms of insurance should be offered at standard premium rates for occupation to mine workers, surface or underground. There can be limitations on cover and premium loadings for some duties and occupations. This Comprehensive Risk Package was commenced in 1994, with a maximum Income Protection claim period of 2 years, later extended to 5 years, where it remains today.
